Grab Your Bucket!

Yay!!!  It's Bucket List (of beads) Day!!!...only because I was a slacker and didn't get any jewelry photography done to show off.  Between the storms, tornado warnings, gluing my fingers together and getting my light box buried underneath the skyscraper of displays and lumber, it all just seemed too daunting of a task for me today.

Here's a short list of my next splurges!!

1.  Large Labradorite beads.  Mesmerizing.

2.  Larimar.  From the Dominican Republic.  I lose myself in these every time I look at them!

3.   Polished blue Kyanite.  While I live close to a kyanite mine,  I've only worked with rough cut Kyanite.  I might be tempted to trade one of my children for a strand of these (kidding, people...untwist your knickers)! Willis Mountain - Kyanite Mining Corp  About 20 miles from my home.  Back in the day you used to able to hike the mountain, but now it's closed off.  Darn!!  I'd so climb it for a bag of these!

  4.  Artisan lampwork (boro is my favorite)...amazing, but I'm afraid I'd hoard it instead of using it!    These beauties are from Beingbeads

5.  Angelite.  Appropriately named.  Heavenly color!

Yes, I'm aware that all of my picks are on the blue spectrum...I guess I have the ocean on my mind!

It's Moobie's Day!

So very hard to believe that my baby Grace is 10 today!  I still can't account where the time has gone.  She stole my heart then, and continues to do so every single day.  If it wasn't for her, chances are I'd be back in an office working, and still complaining about being miserable.  Would you like to hear the story?  There's always a story...

A little over a year ago (March, 2010 I believe), I was sitting on the bed (no studio at the time), making beads, and playing with the polymer clay that I'd had for years.  She came in, sat down beside me and asked me what I was doing.  I distinctly remember my exact words to her; "playing with beads and clay when I should be looking for a job!"  Sweet thing that she is, she gently took the piece I was working on (an epic fail, I might add) and said to me in the most confident voice "you don't need a job Momma, you have talent!"  That was all it took.  If a 9 yr old can have that much faith, why couldn't I?  It didn't matter to her the logistics of it all, or any of the hundreds of reasons why it wouldn't work out...she simply saw what could be.  She still teaches something new every day (in fact, all of my kids do.)  So, it was only appropriate that we coined the business after her nickname gone horribly wrong!

Anyway, today is her day!  No more single digits!!  Happy birthday Moobie Grace!!  Keep shinning "Baby Moo!"

Reason #864

I'm not a list maker.  Ever.  I'm more of a fly by the seat of your pants girl. I realized over the weekend that in order to get everything done in the next two weeks, I was going to have to have a militant approach, scheduling and list making included.  Chris and I sat down last night, he wrote while I continued to work.  We made a stringent schedule for me, and a do-able one for himself...being as he works full time.  I knew it was going to be tight, but I thought "well I can do anything for 2 weeks!"  I should have known better than to be so arrogant!  I'll never learn!

So fast forward to 2:30 this morning.  I awoke to Chris hollaring like a banshee from his side of his bed.  Now, I'm not sure how he did it, but evidently sleeping can also cause him to throw his back out.  His daytime profession is plumbing, so lots of heavy lifting, squatting, and numerous other back breaking (no pun intended) duties.  He tried to go to work this morning, but just couldn't do it (an hour drive one way), so he's home and medicated.

I get busy following my schedule.  Feeling good about it...there goes the arrogance again.  Mid morning, I glanced at Chris' schedule, and realized that most of his list is now going to fall on me, no problem, I've got this!  I quickly read what he had listed, and my heart fell.  While I think I can handle most items, I'm not sure how I'm going build something to make our tables higher & level (spot at show is NOT level), while still needing to sew the ground length table coverings (3), creating 50+ awareness ribbons, finish building frames for signs, finish painting the displays, all while getting more inventory made.  Granted, his back might feel better, but I'd rather do the prep work than have it go out again!  My schedule just got a little more hectic, didn't it?  I know it will all work out, and even if it doesn't...what can I do to change it?  Lord knows I've realized in my 36 years that I don't deal the cards...all I can do is play them!

So, the next time I decide to be organized, someone please remind me of reason # 864!!

Exhausted Ramblings

First, and foremost....HAPPY EASTER!!!  I hope the Easter Bunny was good to all of you!!

It's been a long day here.  We painted.  No, not Easter Eggs...I wish!!  I despise painting, whether it be walls, or in our case today, new displays.  The little kids are with their Dad, so it was the perfect opportunity to get a few mundane chores out of the way before The Heart of Virginia Festival, May 7th.  After careful consideration, I went with bright colors to coordinate with our newly designed business cards.  Maybe I'm biased, but I absolutely love them!!!  I've got to give kudos to my husband, he was up and out building them by 8 a.m. this morning (I'm sure the neighbors were loving us...karma baby)!!  I'd love to show them to ya, but you'll have to wait until after the show...but only to give you the full effect! :)  To only confirm my color choices were right on target (I'm known for second guessing myself), I happened upon a gorgeous glass bowl that will be to die for with the displays yesterday while out stock piling (hoarding is such a negative term) my favorite Ghirardelli Chocolate Raspberry coffee...fate is a beautiful thing, my friends!

Also while in the big city, we sought out a "new to us" bead store.  If you're ever in the Richmond area check out Fandangle Beads.  They had a great eclectic selection, and both Chris & I had no trouble losing ourselves for an hour or more once inside.  I however was a good girl, and only snagged some sari silk.  But they are on my to-do list for after the show!

The grand opening of trend. last Friday went extremely well!  Yay Kim Moody!!!  She's worked so incredibly hard, and deserves every accolade she receives!  You can find my work, along with many other talented artisans, and an array of trendy (imagine that)boutique items there!!

Kim is not only a new boutique owner, but also a talented interior designer and an amazing wedding/event coordinator!!

If

As the time nears my own daughter's high school graduation, I can't control repeatedly licking an old wound.

My brother graduated years before me.  The oldest child.  The prodigal son.  Our Dad gave him a beautifully framed, uplifting poem... a guide to life, if you will.  Read it for yourself.

If - Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Touching.  Philosophical.  Appropriate.  Poignant. Right?

Fast forward 5 years later, and it was finally  my turn to walk the stage.  Of course my Dad was present, and I anticipated for weeks what words of wisdom he'd have for me.  I couldn't wait...seriously...I was looking forward to always having a reference to bring me back to reality when the weight of the world was just too much to bear.

Imagine my facial expression when there was no beautiful poem, sonnet, or even an Irish limerick.  I know you're sitting on the edge of your seat in nail biting anticipation!

You ready?

You sure?

Well here it is in all it's glory...

"Give 'em hell Tania!"

You've got to be kidding me...seriously?  I assure you that was all the perils of wisdom he had for me.  Maybe I really am the black sheep of the family.  The baby.  The wayward child.  The fly-by-the-seat-of-my -pants-we're-not-ever-bailing-you-out-of-jail daughter.  No wonder my life has been utter chaos ever since...I had no reference material, no life direction!

It's been 19 years and I still don't understand the rhyme and reasoning behind his 5 syllable "pep talk."  He's got some explaining to do next month when he comes for Lauren's graduation...and I'm sure he'll come bearing a change your life, don't despair, pick yourself up by your bootstraps, the world is your oyster, inspiration encased within a gilded frame!

Now, please know that the while the above is the honest truth...it's completely being said tongue in cheek!

Happy Earth Day - Upcycling At It's Finest!!

Egads!  I know I'm to be held partially responsible for the deteriorating ozone.  Then again the entire female 80's generation is just as responsible.  After all, it was the decade of the infamous "poof" requiring at least enough Aqua Net hairspray to stop a bullet.

Lucky for us fashion trends have shifted, and we're more conscience of our environment.  I'm even trying to incorporate reduce/reuse/recycle & upcycling into jewelry design.

Currently, I've succeeded in fused plastic & chiffon.  Simple, lightweight, and earth friendly...who could ask for more?

This necklace started out as a couple of good old Walmart bags

And because my dear, sweet husband is a toolaholic, we had scores of Lowe's bags...and I have to admit they are my favorite bags to upcycle!

Each pair of fused plastic earrings/necklace keeps approximately 3-4 bags out of our landfill!!

Finally, aqua chiffon flower accented with seed beads, with white quartz nuggets.  This flower "blossomed" after I rescued it from our local Goodwill.  In it's former life it was a sad 90's throwback blouse.

Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda

It's been one of those days.  You know exactly what I'm talking about...I knew it!  The type of day where you would have been just as productive if you would have just stayed in bed all day eating bonbons and watching soaps.  So what better way to regroup than making a list of tiny reminders for next complete wash out of a day.

-  Reading blogs first thing in the a.m. leads to still reading blogs at noon.

-  Do not try and slice thin layers of clay while holding the block in your palm.

- Spray painting should be saved for days with little to no wind.

- Having the hiccups 4x in a single day is beyond annoying.

-  Slate colored alcohol ink on light brown clay turns forest green when curing to set the other paint techniques.

-  Trying your hand at millefiori is not a bright idea 2 weeks before a show.

-  The SculpeyIII brand of polymer clay is crap.  No more 2nd, 3rd, 10th chances...the formula hasn't changed and does not vary by color choices (wishful thinking).  Stick to Kato, Premo, Fimo Firm & Pardo.  No. Matter. What.

-  Trying to convince your 9 yr old that she loves Chik-Fil-A because that's what you want for dinner will ultimately lead to a meltdown the size of Chernobyl in 2.2 seconds flat.

-  Taking said 9 yr old to Lowe's after said meltdown is NOT their idea of a good time.

-  After two pots of coffee, placing pin head sized clay pieces is harder than passing a field sobriety test!

Don't even ask me how I have this vast abundance of knowledge today!

Studio Envy

Yes, it's true.  I have a bad case of studio envy!  It's hard not to with all the brightly colored, beautifully decorated, and organizational heaven work spaces.  I'm amazed that they have a place to call their own...what a novel idea!

While I do have a dedicated workspace (read: 5 ft long counter space in only a 10x8 room), it's hard to be a creative genius with the washer & dryer taunting me all day.  That's right, I share my space with my most despised chore...it's rather ironic now that I think about it.  Although I may be "in the laundry room" I can promise you that there is little laundry going on in there!  Not only that, but it's the room with the only door to our backyard, so there's always someone brushing by me, knocking something out of my hand, nudging something off of the countertops.  There's no door to keep "wandering eyes" out...but that's not always a bad thing.  I love nothing more than one of my children or even my husband strolling in, and asking me to slide down on the bench so they can sit and watch/play/poke/drop/ my current work.  It's the first place my husband and kids look for me when they come home.  It's where I feel most at home.

So, until my home sprouts an additional room, or until a couple of children are grown and moved on...I'm happy with my little place in the universe!  But....it doesn't stop the drool from short circuiting my keyboard while daydreaming!

Here are just a few blogs/pages that I tend to virtually studio stalk...errr visit

Have The White Jacket Ready

Just a quick post to let everyone know I'm still here, drowning...but still here!   I've been working myself into a frenzy (think Tazmanian Devil on steroids) this week over the the upcoming art show.  I don't know why I do it to myself...ok, ok I'm fully aware why I do it!  Because, while I'm completely non OCD in every other aspect of life (don't listen to the rumors), when it comes to my work and how I present myself I drive myself a little batty (I can't imagine how I come across to everyone else)!  Redesigning, adding new work, organizing, photography, double/triple checking everything, obsessing over minute details that no one will ever notice...except me!  And, don't even get me started on pricing items...definitely not my strong point in this circus/jewelry business endeavor, so I put it off until the last minute!

Then...Wham!  It dawned on me this morning I don't have a single ring made (to fill my new ring displays)...nor do I have any ring blanks.  Which then brought about another maddening check of my entire stock.  Which turned into a dash to order those, and twenty other things I didn't know I needed...darn Etsy!  So, all in all a half of a day wasted!!!

I did have time however to snap a couple of pictures...

Teal blue with pale lime flowers

Jade & porcelain bead accents

This picture drives me insane because the swarovski crystals appear to be an orangey color instead of the identical shade of the red clay in all 80 pictures I took (told ya, I'm a tad anal!)...

Backtracking here.  The corsage I made for my daughter's prom last weekend.  I'd forgotten all about the pictures I had saved until now...

Just a close up of the center of the corsage.

And because I love y'all a sneak peek of something new I've been working on!  Faux wood...I love the combination of dainty flowers and rustic wood...well polymer clay manipulated to vaguely resemble wood like formations.

So, the coffee is hot (yes, @ 10:40 p.m.) and there's work to be done!  Lucky for me the kids are on spring break next week and I can work through the night if needed be....hmmm this seems like deja vu of last year.

Now, should I let my husband know that I've planned for him to build new displays and framework this weekend, or surprise him come Saturday morning?

Insert Catchy Title So That She Has No Clue This is About Her!!

Do you remember the silly, completely inappropriate and often tasteless pranks and dire situations from which death was sure to come, throughout high school?  Now, can you remember who was your sidekick through all the ups and downs and teenage catastrophes?  Chances are even if you can, you have long since lost touch with your juvenille delinquent partner in crime.

Throughout my years of bad decisions, bad relationships, and tragedies I've learned that true friends don't come around often.  In fact, you're lucky if you ever find even one, nevermind be able to hold on to them.  Life happens, situations evolve, and people change...it's as simple as that.  None of us can escape it, we grow, develop different interests, and meet new people, and those "friends" are cast aside like last season's high waisted, wide legged, neon green pants.  What?  They were completely in style at the time...I'm positive!

When I think of high school, middle school even, I think of only one person.  The one who I've eaten more ham sandwiches and Doritos and sour cream with than I care to admit.  The one who couch danced with me to AC/DC.  The one who I ghost hunted with, before Zak ever knew what Ghost Adventures were!  The one who used as much Aqua Net (Salon Selectives if we were feeling posh) as I did.  The one who I've literally bumped my head on the road with during an ice storm (it was a conspiracy) and still laugh about it 20 years later.  The one who I've probably slept with more than my husband.  The one who still remembers the outlandishly decorative notes (what else was I suppose to do in school for 6 ungodly hours?) I used to pass in the halls.  The one who could care less if my house is a diaster, as long as there is coffee brewed or wine to be uncorked.  The one with who I can go weeks/months/years without talking to, and pick right back up like it was yesterday.  The one who says she reads my blog every day (we'll see how long it takes her to read this).  The one I can call no matter the day, place or time, and know she'll be there.  The one who I know has teared up by now from reading this post.  Err...that's about all I can say without posting incriminating details of which neither of us probably wants disclosed to the general public or law enforcement to become privy to.

Right, where was I?  Yeah, her...well it's her birthday tomorrow, and I just wanted her to know that I cherish her and will always love her to death!  I'm so glad to see her happy, even if it means seeing less of her...it's more than worth it!

So, for what it's worth....Happy...Ummm...22nd BirthdayLoni!!

Senior Prom - April 16th, 2011

Just thought I'd share a little of my weekend...

6 Homecomings & 4 Proms later...we have finally reached the finish line!!!

The Three Stooges!  I'm not sure what I'm going to do next year without these 3 around. (L to R:  my daughter & my 2 that I didn't actually give birth to, but are still mine)  This was upon arrival...all elegant and proper...

Which quickly turned into typical silly girl antics

And got progressively worse as we were waiting out the tornado warning.

I asked for a nice picture...

I'm not sure if she lives in reality

I'm assuming the silliness continued into the night...I didn't stick around!

Her corsage that I made for the big night.  We've done local florist corsages for many years, this year she wanted feathers and not for it to look like everyone elses.  Hopefully we accomplished just that.  Of course I couldn't NOT add my own touch to the flower's center!  I also made the boutonniere but didn't get a good picture.

Darn...I just realized I have 2 more daughters & my son to go through all of this with!

Blog Hop - 7000 Bracelets

YAY!!!!  It's Blog Hop Day (Thanks to Lori Anderson for being our hostess!)...and my very first one at that!!  Ok, I know I'm not fooling anyone, technically it's not quite the 16th...but have mercy on me, please?  It's my daughter's senior prom tomorrow, and her 18th birthday on Sunday, which equates to total and complete madness.  Chances are I won't have the opportunity to "blog hop" until late tomorrow night, while awaiting her safe return.

The bracelets will be sent to  The Global Genes Project, an advocacy group who launched "7000 Bracelets for Hope", a children's rare disease campaign.  The bracelets are given to one of 7000 families having children with rare diseases to show them love and support.

I can't wait to see all of the unique bracelets my fellow blog hoppers have created!  But first...

I mulled over my approach and design for days!  I didn't want to use an extender as these often get in my way, nor did I want the recipient to have to return the bracelet to me for resizing.  That left me two obvious choices...memory wire or bangle.  I obviously went with the memory wire!   I used hollow black tubing as  spacers, adorned with icy periwinkle blue glass faceted rounds, an assortment of silver beads & beadcaps and lastly handcrafted (by yours truly) metallic polymer clay rondelles and 2 polymer clay flowered lentil beads.  I hope whomever receives it loves it as much as I loved creating it!

Sidetracked

The past few days have really gotten me anticipating summer...I even let the dog lounge on the threshold of the open back door (Shhh...don't tell my husband)...the warm breeze and the scent of freshly cut grass lifted my spirits, until I had a few buzzing little companions longing to join me, which then brought about the all too familiar "OMG!!-there's-a-bee dance!"   They did however give me inspiration for the day.  I had the cutest brass bee charms by Vintaj  left neglected by winter's fury that have been just been waiting for their day!

I've also been racking my brain trying to come up with unique color combinations for upcoming shows.  All too often I realize after the fact that I gravitate towards certain colors....which nine times out of ten is some variant of green.  A coral red puffy lentil with the palest periwinkle blue.  I love the monochromatic flowers & leaves.

Finished with periwinkle glass tube beads.

From here I got sidetracked playing with the settings on my camera.

Ok, enough of the overgrown, weed ridden backyard!  If paranoid schizophrenia is genetically possible in canines...our pooch could be the poster child...errr...dog!

He hates the lawnmower...passionately!  It doesn't have to be in motion for him to launch into attack mode.  We've even  been known to pull it out just for the sole purpose of entertaining ourselves!

As Promised

I've always wanted to make a bib necklace...it's like a shirt/necklace all in one :)!  This one isn't for the wallflowers amongst us!

Five graduated clay lentils each embellished with swarovski ab crystals and delicate pink flowers.

Ab studded swarovski crystals in disc toggle.

Layers and layers of chiffon & tulle.

Gunmetal findings.

Center lentil.

Seed bead coral necklace with handwrapped copper connectors.  Accented with small clay marine blue lentils with flowery swirls & crystal swarovski centers.

Handwrapped clasp.

I love this color combination.  Warm tomato red with cool shades of aqua.  The turquoise deerskin leather cord is buttery soft (must get more) all on handwrapped silver wire.

I may just have to keep this!

Yummy!

This is where my camera died on me...protesting a rigorous Monday morning photo shoot.  The rest will have to wait.  If I don't get my daughter's corsage made and approved early on in the week, then I have no back up plan if things go south and I need a bailout from the florist! :)
